Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children.
Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at many public libraries including the Fayette County Public Library in Fayetteville in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter.
"It's meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers," said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.
The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves.
"We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter," adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Barry Guitar, Ph.D., of the University of Vermont, Hugo H. Gregory, Ph.D., and June Campbell, M.A., of Northwestern University, and Patricia Zebrowski, P.D., of the University of Iowa.
These five experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced.
More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering remains misunderstood by most people," said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation. "Myths such as believing people who stutter are less intelligent or suffer from psychological problems still persist despite research refuting these erroneous beliefs."
The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, is being distributed free of charge to public libraries nationwide. If you wish to check it out and your library does not have it, ask them to contact the Stuttering Foundation toll-free at 800-992-9392, visit www.stutteringhelp.org and www.tartamudez.org, or e-mail info@stutteringhelp.org for a copy. Some libraries have an older video version.

Teens Spend the Summer Volunteering With the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary
As the bell rang on the last day of school, many students ran off to spend their summer tanning by the pool, playing video games or watching TV. Lenox Tillman and Jay Wormer, however, chose to spend their summer vacation learning the ins and outs of medicine and healthcare volunteering at Piedmont Fayette Hospital through the hospital auxiliary’s youth volunteer program.
“I volunteer every Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and it’s really helped me overcome being shy,” said Tillman. “Everyone is really nice. One person gave me a silver angel pin to say thank you, and said that I deserved angel wings because I was an angel! Now I wear it every day I volunteer.”
This is Tillman’s first year volunteering and she works in the West Outpatient Lobby, escorting patients and families to help make sure they are comfortable. At 14 years old, Tillman will be a freshman in high school this fall. Her grandmother, Gayel Tillman, helped create the PFHA Youth Program more than ten years ago.
“The pool of applicants for our program grows each year,” said Alan Koth, president of the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary. “You can’t help but be impressed by the exceptional quality of these young people, and their commitment to contributing to the community, whether through volunteering, church activities, or school leadership roles. They certainly represent the very best of today’s youth, which in turn is an investment in our future.”
Wormer, 17 years old, is going into his senior year of high school. This is his third year volunteering with the program, spending most of his time in surgical services.
“I think it’s good to help people,” said Wormer. “I feel like I’m putting these family members’ minds at ease.”
Wormer wants to continue with a career in sports medicine. After high school he hopes to attend the University of Georgia and then one day return to Fayette County, perhaps even to work at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.
Tillman and Wormer are among the 160 teenagers who committed their time to Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary’s Youth Volunteer Program this summer. More than 30 percent of these youth volunteers returned from last year.
The program provides volunteer opportunities in nearly 20 service areas at Piedmont Fayette Hospital allowing each participant to have a unique experience and explore the various aspects of the healthcare field.
The eight-week program included a hospital orientation, CPR training, an opportunity to attend a state youth volunteer conference and day-to-day shadowing experiences with PFH employees and volunteers. In its eleventh year, the number of applicants and excitement for the program is as strong as ever.
Students in the PFHA Youth Volunteer Program must be between 14 and 18 years of age, submit an application and essay on why they want to volunteer, provide a letter of reference and be able to commit a minimum of 25 hours over the summer. These students from Fayette, Coweta, Clayton, Fulton and Spalding counties attend public and private schools as well as attend home school.
The Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary is a 270-member team that provides volunteer services to the hospital. If you would like more information regarding volunteer opportunities, please call 770-719-7098.

"'Dora the Explorer Live!' is a culturally rich, interactive theatrical show for preschoolers and their families," said Stuart Rosenstein, Senior Vice President, Resorts and Theatricals, Nickelodeon Recreation. “This show has captured preschool audiences everywhere. We’re thrilled to introduce it to a brand-new audience and to work with the same extraordinary team who brought other successful Nickelodeon shows to life.”
"Dora is to kids what the Rolling Stones are to parents – she’s one of the biggest stars in the world," said Stacey Burns, Vice President of Family Production for Broadway Across America. “‘Dora the Explorer Live!’ has proven to be one of the most successful family titles on the road in recent years. It truly is a blockbuster.”
Featuring familiar songs, a captivating storyline and all the characters children have come to love, "Dora the Explorer Live!" showcases Dora’s friends, including special helper Backpack, best friend Boots, cousin Diego, Map, Swiper the Fox, Tico and Benny. Each step of the gang’s journey consists of a problem or puzzle that Dora and the audience must solve together in order to move on to the next challenge. Dora is proudly bilingual and uses her knowledge of English and Spanish to communicate with her friends, teach the audience Spanish words and overcome obstacles.
"Dora the Explorer Live!" is based on Nickelodeon’s hit animated series, Dora the Explorer, which currently ranks as the number-one-rated preschool show on all of commercial television. Dora is a seven-year-old Latina heroine, whose adventures take place in an imaginative, tropical world filled with jungles, beaches and rainforests. Both the Dora TV and stage shows are designed to actively engage their audiences using a variety of learning techniques.
"Dora the Explorer Live!" is directed by Gip Hoppe who has worked with Nickelodeon on other successful productions, including: "Blue's Clues Live!" and "Blue's Clues Live! - Blue's Birthday Party"; "Dora's Pirate Adventure"; and "Go, Diego, Go Live!" Hoppe also wrote and directed the Broadway play "Jackie: An American Life." He is a founding member and co-artistic director of the Wellfleet Harbor Actor's Theatre.
"Dora the Explorer Live!" is written by Chris Gifford, who, along with Valerie Walsh Valdes and Eric Weiner, created Dora the Explorer. Gifford and Walsh Valdes serve as executive producers of the TV show.
Performances will feature set and costume designs by Tony Award-winners David Gallo and Gregg Barnes, respectively. Gallo has been recently represented on Broadway with "The Drowsy Chaperone", "Xanadu", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," "Lion In Winter," and "Little Me". He was also the production designer for "Jackie: An American Life."

Kool Kidz Camp Serves Special Needs and Typical Children
Annual camp at Joseph Sams School in Fayetteville offers inclusive environment
FOCUS, a 26-year old non-profit that serves children with disabilities, is holding the annual Southside Kool Kidz Camp this week at the Joseph Sams School in Fayetteville, Georgia. This year’s theme for the four-day program is “Camp TEAM” -- Together Everyone Achieves More -- and activities include water play, team sports, music, and arts/crafts.
Kool Kidz summer camps are unique in their philosophy of accepting both special needs and typical children, focusing on each camper’s unique abilities and offering an environment of fun and diverse activities. Physical and occupational therapists and other special needs professionals serve as counselors at the camp, which is also staffed by volunteers from the local community. This year’s camp is serving thirty children ages 4 – 13 in half-day and full-day programs.
FOCUS Executive Director Lucy Cusick explains that Camp Kool Kidz is a growth experience for all participants. “Campers are gently pushed outside their comfort zones. Those with developmental disabilities are urged to give each activity their ‘best shot,’ while ‘typical’ campers learn to appreciate the challenges their special needs peers face on a day to day basis. This promotes patience, understanding and compassion – with a benefit for all our campers who play together in the Kool Kidz traditional day camp format.”
The week will close with a performance by all campers on Thursday.

The Rock Ranch to Host New Event for Youth Groups and Families
R.U.S.H Weekend at The Rock Ranch May 22 and 23
The Rock Ranch, a 1,250-acre cattle ranch owned by Chick-fil-A® founder S. Truett Cathy, will host a 2 day conference for youth groups and families on May 22 and 23. This event offers 2 levels of participation. Youth groups and families interested in attending all 3 sessions spanning Friday and Saturday may call 1-800-991-RUSH to register for $39. The $39 registration includes a t-shirt, a journal, lunch on Saturday, and 3 sessions that include praise music led by the band “Fee”, keynote speakers that include Mark Hall from Casting Crowns, and activities that include dodge ball, paintball, flag football, volleyball and a rock climbing wall. This level of participation is designed to cater to church youth groups. Youth group and family camp sites are also available for reservation by contacting The Rock Ranch at 706 647-6374.
The second level of participation is intended to appeal to individuals and families. Saturday, May 23, The Rock Ranch will open its gates to the public at 6pm to purchase admission tickets for $10. This $10 (per person) admission ticket grants access to the third and final session of R.U.S.H weekend. This session will include a message by speaker Mark Pritchett and a Christian music concert by National recording artist Steve Fee and the band “Fee”. Fee’s music, including hit titles “All Because of Jesus” and “Glorious One”, is often featured on Atlanta radio at Atlanta’s J93.3 and 104.7 The Fish, Columbus radio 103.7 The Truth and 91.3 Family Life Radio in Macon.
Following the concert, there will be a fireworks extravaganza that is also included in the $10 per person admission price.
T-shirts will be sold at the event and The Chuck Wagon Cafe’ and The Rock Country Store will be open and serving concessions and other goodies.
“This is an opportunity to be good stewards of our resources here at The Rock Ranch”, said Jeff Manley, general manager of The Rock Ranch. “We are excited about this partnership and this event that will minister to area youth groups and families.”
The Rock Ranch event Coordinator, Adam Pugh added, “It is always a pleasure to invite families to The Rock Ranch to spend quality time together, but it is especially rewarding to have a group gathered for such a wonderful purpose and with such talented and experienced worship leaders.”
Mark Pritchett, founder of R.U.S.H ministries (an acronym that stands for reaching un-churched students for him) remarked, “I am very pleased that The Rock Ranch has partnered with us in this event – it is a great venue for this purpose. Registration this year has been strong and I am excited about what God will do here both during this event and into the future.”
For a full itinerary and schedule of R.U.S.H Weekend at The Rock Ranch visit www.therockranch.com.
Other Events
In 2008, over 46,000 guests attended The Rock Ranch and enjoyed activities and events like Conestoga Wagon camping, educational school field trips, Fall Family Fun Days, company picnics and special public events like Celebrate America. The Rock Ranch has planned even more family fun for 2009 and a full calendar of events is available at www.therockranch.com.
The next big event at The Rock Ranch is Celebrate America at The Rock Ranch on June 27, 2009. This is the grandest of all family events at The Rock Ranch. 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of this event and there are many new additions. This patriotic event celebrates American Freedom and the men and women who have served and are serving to protect it. There will be a concert featuring national recording artist Andrew Carlton, followed by a fireworks extravaganza that will rival any display in the state. The event will include reptile shows, a master puppeteer and many family attractions. Attractions include rock climbing walls, locomotive train rides, pony rides, hay rides, paddle boats, the grand opening of slide hill, a bungee trampoline, the giant jumping pillow, the watermelon cannon, and much more. There will also be an appearance by the “America I Am” super truck – a traveling black history museum sponsored by Tavis Smiley and Walmart. This event also features a special rubber duck race for charity. The Great American Duck Derby will allow guests to adopt rubber ducks that will race downstream to a finish line where the winning duck owner will win a $5,000 first prize. There is a chance that one lucky participant could win a million dollars. This event will raise money for Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center for special needs children.
The gates open, for Celebrate America, at 2pm on Saturday June 27 and the event lasts until about 10pm. Admission for this event is only $20 per vehicle, regardless of the number of occupants, and admission includes all standard attractions and entertainment. A wide variety of concessions and merchandise will be sold separately. Admission for buses is $30.
About The Rock Ranch
Initially intended solely to be a working cattle ranch dedicated to pure-bred Brangus cattle operations, The Rock Ranch in 1994, opened its doors for school and church groups, as well as for corporate events and private parties. The ranch further established itself as a public destination in 2006 with the inception of Fall Family Fun Days, themed Saturdays in the fall dedicated to affordable family entertainment.
In much the same way as Truett Cathy has made it his personal mission to teach young people and provide them with good, quality role models; The Rock Ranch seeks to use its setting and its amenities as a way to reinforce many of the values and principles that are vital to the development of character in children. For reservations or directions, contact The Rock Ranch at (706) 647-6374 or visit www.TheRockRanch.com. The Rock Ranch is located just 58 miles from downtown Atlanta, 38 miles north of Macon, and 61 miles northeast of Columbus.

Young Scientists Discover Fernbank Museum’s Summer Camp
Fernbank Museum of Natural History offers a world of adventure and discovery to young explorers during Summer Camp 2009. One week-sessions of day camps are offered throughout June and July.
Campers will transform into ecologists, paleontologists, geologists, marine biologists, entomologists and more. Highly trained staff and a low counselor-to-camper ratio ensure each child a unique and fun-filled week of learning, exploration, activities, crafts and games. Three age-appropriate camps are offered: Junior Naturalists for children entering Kindergarten and 1st grade; Discovery Team for rising 2nd and 3rd graders and Science Squad for rising 4th and 5th graders.
Camps are tailored to each age group and are rooted in academic programs. Campers have the opportunity to be different types of scientists each day with projects ranging from studying nocturnal animals to experiments with dry ice.
“The themed day structure is super,” said Deirdre Lavieri, whose sons have attended Fernbank’s Summer Camps for several years. “Each day the activities are focused on one area of study, so no two days are alike, and every activity is part of a big idea for the day.”
Camp will also include a tour of the Museum, exploring the Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries exhibit and viewing an IMAX® film. Campers will also take a guided hike through Fernbank’s nature trails.
From microscopic organisms to the world’s largest dinosaurs, summer camp at Fernbank Museum of Natural History offers a variety of educational activities to inspire young scientists.
Camp Dates:
Junior Naturalists (children entering K & 1st grade): June 8-12 and July 6-10
Discovery Team (children entering 2nd & 3rd grade) June 15-19 and July 13-17
Science Squad (children entering 4th & 5th grade) June 22-26 and July 20-24.
Members pay $300/week and non-members $350/week. Camps run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
To download a registration form, visit fernbankmuseum.org or call 404.929.6379 for more information. The deadline for registration is May 18. Registration is on a space-available basis.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road, NE, just east of midtown Atlanta. To learn more, visit fernbankmuseum.org.

Alexandria LaFaye’s Newest Novel Explores Challenges of Growing Up
...and Helps Area Youngsters Do Same at KidsPeace
In Alexandria LaFaye’s new novel, Water Steps, a young girl learns to overcome a traumatic childhood experience and eventually finds a new, safe, healthy and happy world filled with love. How perfectly fitting, then, that a portion of the proceeds from her latest creation should go to help children being helped to overcome traumas and crises at the local charity KidsPeace.
Ms. LaFaye, an award-winning writer of children’s books, chose KidsPeace because of its 126-year history of helping young people make their way through the many challenges and dangers of growing up.
“Your commitment to helping children is wonderful,” says LaFaye. “I am so glad that I chose KidsPeace as a charitable match for Water Steps. Yours is a story more people should know about.”
Like a child’s view of the world, the story is both realistic and fantastic, and creates a vivid and insightful story about a teenage girl, Kyna, and the importance of family ties and personal strength.
When Kyna’s parents announce that they have rented a summerhouse on Lake Champlain, Kyna’s heart fills with dread. As a child who witnessed the death of her family during a storm at sea, Kyna has a fear of water, which no amount of prodding from her adoptive, water-loving parents can alleviate. After arriving at the house, Kyna finds that the only other kid her age is Tylo, a boy neighbor obsessed with proving that silkies, animals similar to those in Loch Ness, inhabit the lake. To prove to Tylo that the silkies are merely a legend, Kyna must face her paralyzing fear of water in ways she never could have anticipated.
Water Steps masterfully combines elements of folklore and fantasy with a contemporary, realistic depiction of one girl’s struggle to overcome her fears and traumas of the past. Engaging and imaginative, Water Steps is a story for young readers who like adventures and surprise endings.
“The book is a delight and beautifully captures the pleasures, pain, and occasionally, terrors of childhood,” says KidsPeace Bowdon Executive Director Scott Merritt. “Alexandria LaFaye deeply understands children and their feelings - something those who work with kids wish was more common. We are honored that Ms. LaFaye, who has done so much to enrich the lives of America’s children, has come to be counted as a friend of the children at KidsPeace. On behalf of all the Kynas and Tylos we help to overcome crises every day, thank you!”
** Copies of Water Steps (Milkweed Editions, $6.95 softcover/$16.95 hardcover) can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, and Powell’s, or online at www.milkweed.org . A portion of the proceeds from the softcover printing will go to KidsPeace.
KidsPeace is a 126-year-old children’s crisis charity dedicated to giving hope, help, and healing to children facing crisis. With three centers in Georgia, including a major residential campus in Bowdon, KidsPeace directly helps children with life-saving treatment to overcome the crises of growing up. Supported by VIP leaders, including its national spokesperson Leeza Gibbons and child safety and self-esteem icon RETRO BILL, KidsPeace helps millions each year through prevention and awareness campaigns designed to help America’s kids and parents avoid and overcome the kinds of crises that can strike any child - from disasters and personal traumas to family issues and life crises. KidsPeace was named “The Outstanding Organization” of its kind in the country by the American Association of Psychiatric Services for Children and was called “a prototype of what we need for all children everywhere” by the late, nationally renowned child and family expert, Dr. Lee Salk

Opening the family events of the festival is Coad Canada Puppets, one of North America’s leading puppet theatres, with an award-winning theatrical experience that has entertained audiences in nearly twenty countries around the world. Mallory Lewis, daughter of beloved children's entertainer Shari Lewis, will headline the festival alongside her mother’s legendary television star, Lamb Chop. Los Titiriteros de Binéfar, one of Spain’s leading troupes, will present a charming story featuring puppets made from recycled materials that lyrically evoke the sights and sounds of the natural world. Teatro SEA presents a hilarious, bilingual spectacle featuring over 40 life-sized puppets in the style of a Spanish Operetta.
For adult audiences, Puppets Take Atlanta & Beyond offers two of France’s most innovative puppet theatres. Bob Théâtre uses an assortment of objects from light bulbs to coffee grinders in a fantastic, adults-only adaptation of the Dracula legend. Reviving one of the world’s oldest puppet traditions, the young artists of Compagnie La Pendue present what is arguably the best Punch and Judy show – ever.
Other opportunities include an array of workshops for children and adults, a film screening of Shadowlight Productions’ epic Mongolian fantasy In Xanadu, and three exhibits dedicated to the life and work of Jim Henson. There is truly something for everyone.
What makes this festival truly exciting are the partners who have joined together to make it possible. This grand collaborative effort builds on the success of the 2002 festival, which attracted over 25,000 attendees. Joining the Center for Puppetry Arts and the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau are Puppeteers of America, Union International de la Marionette (UNIMA), The Arts Council, Inc. (Gainesville), City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, Fulton County Arts Council, Georgia Council for the Arts, Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia Tourism Foundation, Roswell Cultural Arts Center, Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau, Southern Arts Federation, Southwest Arts Center, and the Woodruff Arts Center.
For more information, please see attached Fact Sheet. Beginning April 20, 2009, information about Puppets Take Atlanta and Beyond can be found at www.atlanta.net/puppets.

Be creative with Summer Plans for your children! From June 8 through June 19, Arts Clayton will present two weeks of art packed fun at the 16th annual KALEIDOSCOPE Summer Art Camps and the Summer Art Camp for Young TEENS!
Through art related activities, instruction and special programs, elementary age children from all across the south metro area will enjoy hands-on instruction about art, photography, dance, drama, music and more. KALEIDOSCOPE Summer Art Camp is designed to be an overall Art Experience for children. EVERY child at EVERY experience level will participate in BOTH Visual and Performing Arts during their time at camp. It is Arts Clayton’s goal to encourage children to explore and develop an appreciation for ALL of the Arts and to learn that by working together THROUGH the arts, we bridge all gaps and come together as a community. At the conclusion of Art Camp an exciting Musical Performance AND a Gallery Style Art Exhibit will be presented by the campers for the enjoyment of family, friends, and community!
Campers will also enjoy special visits and exciting daily art related programs including a theatrical performance by Offshoot Productions, Musical Storytelling with Eric Litwin, Dancing with Festival Ballet, and “Phun Stuff” with Mr. Greggy! The Clayton County Fire and Police Departments will pay a visit allowing campers an inside peek the extraordinary safety vehicles they drive and an opportunity to talk to real police and fire officers! Campers will also have an opportunity to participate in the Kaleidoscope Campers Talent Show!
The KALEIDOSCOPE Summer Arts Camp is designed for children entering first through sixth grades next fall, and will be held mornings 8:30 am to 12:15 pm at Swint Elementary located at 500 Highway 138 near historic downtown Jonesboro. The all inclusive cost of the full two-week program is only $170. There are no additional registration or supply fees. For MIDDLE SCHOOL students entering the 7th, 8th or 9th grades next fall, Arts Clayton offers the Summer Art Camp for Young TEENS. The program welcomes the return of the ever popular Cartooning and Animation classes as well as Digital Photography, Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. Students at all experience levels in all classes are welcome and encouraged to participate. Supplies are included in the tuition price unless noted otherwise.
Young TEEN Camp would not be complete without our Theatre Arts classes for the rising young stars! During the two-week Theatre Camp students will be exposed to elements of stage movement, acting, costuming, improvisation, and audition techniques. Actors will learn not only basic acting skills, but will tap into their own experiences and imagination to perform and communicate. The final production will receive a public performance! To complement the Theatre Camp, Arts Clayton offers additional classes in Back Stage TECH-niques where students learn about costume and set design, stage make-up (blood, warts & scars!) and the Acting-Up / Acting-Out class where students explore topics such as playwriting, narration, and mime.

Atlanta History Center's Sheep to Shawl Offers Fun for All Ages
Springtime has arrived at the Atlanta History Center! Activities are heating up all over the thirty-three acre campus as the gardens and trails come alive with the full bloom of the season.
As the weather continues to heat up, the sheep at the History Center’s 1860s Tullie Smith Farm become eager to shed their woolly winter coats. These furry coats served them well during the chilling winter months, but have now grown too warm for comfort. It is time for their annual celebratory shearing.
Discover “shear fun” at the Atlanta History Center on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm during Sheep to Shawl. Visitors of all ages enjoy a day full of exploration as they take a journey back in time to experience antebellum homesteading at the farm and learn the traditional practices for shearing sheep’s wool.
The journey from Sheep to Shawl begins with sheep shearing demonstrations at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. Children delight in the receipt of a handful of wool for keepsake before traveling on to other entertaining hands-on activities and demonstrations as the wool is washed, sorted, carded, spun, dyed, and woven into a beautiful shawl.
Sheep to Shawl offerings also include guided tours of the Tullie Smith Farm house. Explore the farm and experience the customary lifestyle and activities of a nineteenth-century Georgia farm. Interact with costumed living history interpreters as they present authentic demonstrations of wool cleaning and carding, wool dying, weaving, spinning, woodworking, blacksmithing, basket weaving, candle dipping, and open-hearth cooking.
Take in the sounds of old-time fiddle and banjo music provided by the Georgia Potlickers while you tour the farm. Listen to Southern folktales spun for the young and old at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm while traditional games including graces, hoops, and egg races are sure to keep the little ones busy. And, don’t forget to make a special visit to the barnyard to meet, Belle, our newest addition to the Gulf Coast sheep family.
Four years ago, the Atlanta History Center’s Tullie Smith Farm became home to three adult Gulf Coast sheep; two ewes (Poppy and Peaches), and one ram (Napoleon). Gulf Coast sheep are one of the oldest types of sheep in the United States and have existed for several centuries. They were brought to the United States by the Spanish, who began to settle Florida in the 1500s. Later importations of other breeds of sheep mixed with the original population, all evolving under the strong natural selection of the native range conditions of Florida and the other Gulf Coast states. Today a small remnant of this sheep population survives. Gulf Coast breed is today on the critical list, according to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. There are fewer than 200 annual
registrations of Gulf Coasts in the United States and estimated global population less than 2,000. The Atlanta History Center is helping to bring the breed back. Gulf Coast sheep are characterized by their refined bone structure a non-wooly face, small body, clean legs and their underlines and are white to dark brown in color. This breed was a favorite of Southern farmers because they have a natural resistance to internal parasites and are adapted to the hot and humid conditions of the Southeast.
After a visit to the farm, guests also enjoy excursions to the tranquil Quarry Garden to discover beautiful spring blooms. Guided garden tours are offered at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Inside the museum, delve into one or several of the Atlanta History Center’s signature exhibitions. And, in the Garden Overlook at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, take in the distinctive sounds of the dulcimer as played in traditional music style by In Town Down Home and Sweet and Lows.
Sheep to Shawl is sponsored by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council and supported by the Poppy Garden Club.
This special program is included with the price of general Atlanta History Center admission. For more information, please call 404.814.4000 or visit www.AtlantaHistoryCenter.com/S2S. Girl Scouts can purchase a special Sheep to Shawl patch for participating in the day’s activities. A special group rate for Girl Scouts is available; call 404.814.4062.

Girl Scouts celebrates its 97th birthday

Girl Scouts was founded on March 12, 1912, by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah Ga. and this momentous occasion, which began 97 years ago, has recently been honored by the state of Georgia. On the 97th birthday of Girl Scouts, the Georgia House of Representatives officially proclaimed March 12 as Girl Scout Day across the nation.
Over 100 Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, Inc. and Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Inc. witnessed Rep. Dobbs isn’t the only Girl Scout serving in a prominent position within our government; two-thirds of women serving in the U.S. Congress are Girl Scout alumnae.
In addition to meeting Rep. Dobbs and learning more about Georgia’s government, girls had the opportunity to meet Governor Sonny Perdue and to bring him some of his favorite Girl Scout Cookies.

The Center for Puppetry Arts and NACA-Atlanta present A WEEKEND OF CHINESE CULTURE
The Center for Puppetry Arts (CPA) and the National Association of Chinese Americans-Atlanta (NACA-Atlanta) are pleased to present a Weekend of Chinese Culture, March 7 & 8. The weekend will feature performances of Old Man and the Monkeys & other Chinese Tales, by Dragon Art Studio (Tigard, OR), one of the few professional Chinese puppetry companies in the United States, as well as special tours highlighting the Chinese hand puppet collection in the Center’s global puppet Museum, Puppets: The Power of Wonder and other fun-filled activities focused on Chinese culture.
Old Man and the Monkeys & other Chinese Tales is presented as part of the Center’s 2008-09 Family Series, and runs March 3 – March 15, 2009. In this compilation of five traditional and non-traditional tales of Ancient China, stories of compassion, consideration, and the greatest ping-pong match of all time, are told with the grace and precision that only classically trained, veterans of the puppetry stage can tell. Critically acclaimed puppeteer, actress and Beijing Opera singer, Yuquin Wang and master puppeteer and graduate of the Beijing Puppetry Art School, Zhengli Xu, perform short vignettes that are told with beautiful music, ornate characters and, remarkably, no dialogue!
In addition to the performances, the schedule for the weekend includes guided tours of Puppets: The Power of Wonder by Museum Curator Jeremy Underwood at 12pm and 2pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. This tour highlights the Chinese hand puppets in the permanent collection. As an added treat on Sunday from 4-5pm, there will be a Dragon Art Studio backstage tour (included with admission to 3pm show) given by Brenda Xu. This behind-the-scenes peek gives an in-depth look at how Dragon Art Studio successfully blends puppetry and music with elegance, humor, and special effects to create a uniquely entertaining theatrical experience.
Old Man and the Monkeys & other Chinese Tales will be presented in the Downstairs Theater. Showtimes are: Tues – Fri @ 10:30am & 12pm; Sat @ 11am, 1pm, & 3pm; Sun @ 1pm & 3pm.
Tickets for patrons ages 2 and older are $14.82 + tax for the general public and $8.33 + tax for Members.
The All-Inclusive ticket price includes a performance, the Create-A-Puppet Workshop,* and admission into the permanent Museum exhibit Puppets: The Power of Wonder, and special exhibits including Jim Henson: Wonders from His Workshop. *Dual/Family Level and above.
